Blind Chinese activist 'escapes' from house arrest

Beijing: Chen Guangcheng, a blind lawyer in China, who won global recognition for detection of human rights abuses under China's "one child" policy has escaped from house arrest, his supporters said Friday.
Chen was unable to leave their homes in eastern China, as he was released four years in prison September 2010. He is known to suffer from a number of beatings and believed to be in poor health.
"He was able to get out of his home April 22 and his friends were warned, and sent him to a safer place outside (his home province) in Shandong," Bob Fu, a US-based activist in close contact with Chen, told AFP.
Argument is supported by China-based advocate, lawyer.
Fu - the former Tiananmen Square democracy activist who fled China in 1996 after being persecuted their religious beliefs - did not want to describe the circumstances Donggushi Chen's escape from the village to ensure safety.
Fu said he had been in direct communication with supporters, who accompanied Chen in a secure location.
Fu added he had been in contact with the U.S. Congress, State Department and U.S. Embassy in China ", to alert them and seek help Chen Guangcheng, and those who help him and he is hiding."
But he could not confirm rumors that Chen was currently in the U.S. Embassy in Beijing, saying that while in hiding, Chen had expressed reluctance to leave the country.
"I asked him if he was ready to come out of China. He is very reluctant, and he said he wants to fight on until the end of the Chinese citizens' rights. He wants to live a normal life as a citizen of China," Fu said.
The U.S. Embassy did not respond requests for comment.
Fu said Chen's escape came to light in the early morning of Friday morning, when state officials went in search of his house in the village Donggushi and that his older brother Chen Guangfa.
One of Chen's China-based supporters, whose name honors for his safety, told AFP that the violence erupted in the village after the arrival of government officials - including the governor of the local municipality.
"Kegui Chen (Chen's nephew) declined the governor and several other people, and he had already surrendered to local police," he said.
Fu said Chen Guangcheng's wife, mother and child were now holed up in his house, unable to leave, and surrounded by police, as well as the family of his elder brother, who had been arrested.
He added that one of the Peirong Chen supporters who helped to transport him to a safe place, was arrested in his home in eastern city of Nanjing on Thursday.
Chen's fame to help people to sue officials over a wide range of injustices, with corrupt government officials, in particular the goal.
After pursuing a blind law school during his youth, he armed himself of legal knowledge and began to provide free legal assistance to the villagers, although it has no formal legal qualifications.
He was jailed in 2006 after accusing family planning officials in Shandong Province, forcing at least 7,000 women to be sterilized or undergo late-term abortions.
That same year, Chen was named Time Magazine is one of the world's 100 most influential people of their courage in exposing abuses of sterilization and abortion.
Journalists and activists who attempted to visit Chen during his house arrest has not been able to get home and some have even posted guards roughed by every entrance to their village.
His home confinement has been particularly difficult, even in China where dissidents and lawyers have repeatedly held under some form of house arrest, when they upset the authorities, or are considered to be at risk.
