Researchers working in a dense jungle in Indonesia have "discovered" a big, gray monkey, so rare, it was believed by many to be extinct.
They were all the more puzzled to find Miller's grizzled Langur - its black face framed with fluffy, Dracula Mr. White Collar - well outside the area previously stored in the home district.
The team set up camera traps Wehea Forest eastern tip of the island of Borneo in June, hoping to capture pictures of clouded leopards, orangutans and other wildlife are known to assemble a number of mineral salt licks.
Pictures came back to surprise all of them: groups of monkeys, no one had ever seen.
Almost no photographs hoary langurs in existence, it was a challenge at first to confirm their suspicions, said Brent Loken, a graduate student at Simon Fraser University in Canada, and one of the lead researchers.
"We were all pretty ecstatic that, wow, this monkey is still alive, and also that it is Wehea," said Mr. Loken.
Monkey, which is a heavy reddish nose and eyelids, and lips, once roamed the northeastern part of Borneo, as well as the islands of Sumatra and Java, and the Thai-Malay Peninsula. But public concern was several years ago, that they may be extinct.
Forests where the monkeys once lived had been destroyed by fire, human encroachment and conversion to agriculture and mining, and extensive field research in 2005, began to empty.
"For me, this discovery represents a monkey so many species in Indonesia," Mr. Loken said.
"There are so many animals we know so little, and their ranges are disappearing so quickly," he said. "It feels like a lot of these animals are going to become extinct soon."
The next step is to return to the 90 000 acre (38 000 hectares) of forest trying to find out how many grizzly langurs exist, according to a team of local and international researchers, who published their findings in the American Journal of Primatology Friday.
They appear in more than 4,000 images taken over two months, said Loken. "We're trying to find out all we can," he said. "But it really feels like a race against time."
Experts are not included in the study were highly recommended.
"It really is a very enigmatic species," said Erik Meijaard, conservation scientist, who spent eight years doing field research in the field.
In the past they were hunted almost to extinction for their meat and bezoar "stones," he said, which can occasionally be found in their guts.
Bezoars, such as Harry Potter fans know the lectures of Professor Snape is a first-year students, who believe that some people neutralize the poison.
Mr. Meijaard said the animal has long been considered a subset of Hose's Leaf Monkey, who is also apparent from the Malaysian side of Borneo, but now it seems that there can be no question.
"We think it may actually be a different species," he said, "that would make Wehea Discovery even more important."
