Syria: UN team visits battered Homs

Damascus: UN monitors visited the restive province of Homs on Saturday ahead of an expected Security Council vote to enable hundreds of observers across Syria to monitor a shaky ceasefire.
"The team of international observers visited the province of Homs and meet the governor," state-run news agency reported hopefully.
The small team before the monitor, who was prevented from visiting Homs for "security," is to tour the different districts of the city of the same name, with the battered Baba Amr.
Regime forces shelled the Baba Amr for a month, leaving hundreds dead, according to the monitor, before retaking it from the rebels on March 1. Two Western journalists were included in the deceased.

Monitors say more than 200 people died in Syria due to shaky ceasefire which the government and rebels committed themselves went into effect.
Meanwhile, Amnesty International expressed concerns about the fate of a cardiologist, Dr. Mahmud al-Rifai, arrested in Damascus on February 16 and "believed to be tortured" treated injured protesters.
The London-based group that raised similar Fears about another doctor, Mohammed al-Ammar, whom it said was a peaceful activist detained on March 19 in the southern city of Daraa, cradle of the uprising.
On the political front, UN envoy Vitaly Churkin Russia called for a "unanimous vote" in the text to dispatch monitors to Syria, where his country has taken a leading role in drawing up.
But his U.S. counterpart Susan Rice indicated vote was not certain Saturday in the West Security Council decides whether the conditions for the force is strong enough.
