Diversifying Your Freelance Business

I admit I’m one of those people that likes to keep their options open…when it comes to business anyways. Keeping my options open has led me to some great opportunities in my freelance career, but also left me feeling frazzled, scattered and unfocused when I have millions (or ok, maybe more like a handful) of projects going on. But guest speaker Matt Villano offered helpful advice on diversifying for freelancers and not keeping your eggs in one basket during his talk at the Society of Professional Journalists Conference this past week. And it soothed my frazzled soul.

As all freelancers know, budgeting can be difficult, but if you solely rely on one or two sources of income, it can be a downright disaster if one source dries up. Villano stressed the importance of diversifying your freelance career in his presentation, “The Business of Freelancing: How to Make it as a Full-Time Free Agent Writer” (you can download the full presentation on his site). During his talk, Villano presented a pie chart showing how his freelance income sources changed once the travel industry, his main source of income, crashed, spurring him to branch out and diversify. As a result, Villano’s business is now much more financially secure, as he has multiple sources of revenue.

It is important for writers to be flexible and willing to change to best sell their services, Villano said, so it is ok to shift your focus and priorities from year to year. This is a relief for me, as I have changed my business focus since its inception in 2008, and sometimes I feel frazzled with so much change and so many projects going on. Yet it is exciting and always interesting to find new outlets to sell my writing, and to keep up with the ever-changing tech side of how we share information.

Mesothelioma Claim Considerations

Undertaking to pursue a case for asbestos compensation or making a mesothelioma claim almost invariably, involve financial obligations and medical expenses which are often an added burden on mesothelioma patients and their families.

Compensatory awards include medical costs – including home and/or hospice care – loss of income, which are very specific, objective and measurable, and conjugal life, pain and suffering, which are more subjective and probaly require medical testimony. Punitive awards can be very substantial but can also be reduced or overturned on appeal.

Out-of-court settlements are considered a desirable outcome because they avoid trial time and costs and may result in speedy payment of compensation. They are also less costly to the defendant, who would also wish to avoid negative publicity. An offer to settle is not an admission of liability and is often conditional on public non-disclosure and relinquishing the right to pursue further action against the defendant.
