Sonia, Mayawati hit campaign trail in Uttar Pradesh today

The battlelines are drawn and the top commanders were preparing to do battle for Uttar Pradesh to the masses.

While Mayawati will begin his campaign and will hold almost 30 rallies across the state over the next two weeks, starting at Sitapur and Barabanki now, Congress president Sonia Gandhi has led his party from the front and address rallies in Gonda and Deoris.

Uttar Pradesh will vote in seven phases by February and March. The first of the seven-phase elections were held on February 8.

With two strong campaigning in what is seen as a mini-general elections, state security is tightened.

While Mayawati will battle to hold on to power, the Congress is seen as its best chance in more than two decades to change the fortunes in the state under the leadership of the party general secretary Rahul Gandhi.

While Mayawati and Sonia Gandhi will fight the battle from the two ends, the remaining two corners are occupied by the Samajwadi Party Mulayam Singh and the BJP.

On Tuesday, the Congress released its manifesto promising a clean UP envisages pulling out most of what Mayawati has done. At the same time, the party is focussed on the Muslim vote and promised to implement 4.5 per cent sub-quota for backward Muslims in the state along with focussing on education, health and law and order.
