Lawyers Needed To Aid the Needy

West Virginia lawyers have to pick up the federal government left off in 2012, as federal budget cuts cost of Legal Aid of West Virginia nearly $ 500,000. Group, which provides assistance to those who can not afford to pay for lawyers, says it probably will dismiss several lawyers.

When Congress passed an emergency bill to use, it meant cutbacks for many who rely on federal financial aid. Those in agriculture, commerce, justice and science, to name a few, will have to be even more creative and work harder to compensate for the loss.

Those who rely on help from Legal Aid is just as much need of help now as they were a couple of months ago. Legal Aid's Director of Development, Jennifer Jordan, said demand for services in 2010 increased 20 percent during 2009, and by the end of 2011 the group was already turned away seeking help.

With only 40 Legal Aid lawyers serve West Virginia's 55 counties, the staff were stretched to the limit. Now there will be cuts.

Legal aid lawyers handle cases such as domestic violence, bankruptcy and dealing with public services. According to Managing Director Adrienne worthy, the group is not yet certain what programs will be hurt most by the cuts.

West Virginia University law professor and member of access to justice Commission Bob Bastress says he hopes state lawmakers will consider increasing assistance to legal counsel.

But if money is not available, there may be little the state can do.

Of course, neither the federal or state government power to stop those who have resources and skills from assisting those in need of a helping hand.

If Legal Aid is forced layoffs, it will be up to local lawyers to swallow the loss of wages and offer their services pro bono. Here in our area, lawyers have a commendable record of stepping up to the plate. In the past, they have been recognized for their high rate of pro bono work. The need for help will not disappear even when the money does.\
