New Delhi: The attack on an Israeli embassy car in New Delhi on Monday afternoon was a terror strike and carried by a very drunken man, Home Minister P Chidambaram said on Tuesday. That was the first time that the Indian government has admitted that the Israeli embassy car blast was a panic attack.
"It is quite clearly a very skillful person committed this attack. Reason to believe was targeted Israeli diplomatic wife. We have to proceed on the basis that it was a panic attack. Team has been deployed to trace the motorcycle rider I'm not pointing the finger at any particular organization. we condemn anyone has this intense, "said Chidambaram on Tuesday after chairing a meeting attended by Home Secretary RK Singh, Special Secretary (Internal Security) by Ajay Chadha, National Security Advisor Shiv Shankar Menon, Intelligence Bureau chief N Sandhu and other senior officials of MHA.
The motorcycle rider is attached a magnetic device on the Israeli embassy car while it is waiting at a red light and a few seconds later the explosion occurred, injuring four people including the wife of Israel Defence ambassador.
Chidambaram said the diplomat's wife seemed obvious target but refused to name any terror group for carrying out the strike.
Police examined CCTV footage from the area, including from Prime Minister Manmohan Singh's residence and the Israeli embassy, but the number of motorcycles has not seen any footage.
The Home Minister said that eyewitnesses told the investigators that a single man in a red motorcycle bomb planted a stick in the car, which explodes after five seconds. This is the first time that such bombs were used in a terror attack in India. No timer or detonator bombs were found and most likely used as a sulfur-based compound, resulting in fires that caused the maximum damage.
An Israeli team consisting of forensic and security experts are coming to India to help investigators even as Jerusalem has blamed Iran for the attack.
Sources say bomb is as big as a human palm, most probably a self-triggering device worked without a remote control. Investigators are surprised that the fuel tank of the car did not explode, indicating the incendiary nature of the explosive.
The police are looking for the red-colored motorcycle, which can be stolen, used to carry the attack. Investigators are still intensified the checking at the hotel in the city.
Sources say the Home Ministry was expecting a detailed report from Delhi Police in preliminary investigation by Tuesday night.
The Delhi Police has also sought the identity of photos and copies of passports of all Iranians in Delhi after Israel informed the investigators that they suspected that Iran was behind the attack.
