Kolkata: The Dalai Lama today called "routine" China protests in India to give him a platform to air his views, saying that they consider him a "demon", although his status is now "semi-retired."
Ignoring Beijing's reservations, the West Bengal Governor MK Narayanan was present at the program, Mother Teresa, who had dealt with the Tibetan spiritual leader.
When asked about the letter from the Chinese Consulate in the state government to ensure that the CM and the Governor did not participate in the program, Narayanan, exclaimed: "What do you expect me to do about it? If they are written to the Permanent Secretary. They have posted."
When a news reporter noted that the Chinese consulate has opposed his visit here, the Dalai Lama said: "This is just routine. Their point of view, it is also logical. Some Chinese officials hold me like a demon. They raise any objection."
Asked if he expected such a reaction from the Chinese government, he quipped, "I have encountered this before. I do not want to comment on a letter to the Chinese consulate."
"This year, in March I officially, formally handed over to the political leadership. I am no longer head of political administration. So, I do not like to politicize the visit here," he remarked.
China's objection to the routine: The Dalai Lama Even if China treats Tibet's spiritual leader as persona non grata in New Delhi, has suggested that he is a respectable religious leader and a democratic country, there are no restrictions to freedom of expression.
Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee could not participate in the program because his mother was in critical condition, according to Trinamool Congress MP Derek O 'Brien.
