Lucknow: The Samajwadi Party is all set to form the next government in the state of their own.
According to the protagonists of all the 403 seats, Mulayam Singh Yadav's Samajwadi Party is celebrated in almost 220 seats, which is well beyond the number of 203 needed for a simple majority in the UP assembly.
Counting is underway in all 403 seats and all the results are expected by evening.
If the wires are converted into results, Mulayam Singh Yadav will form the next government without anyone's support.
SP state president and a star campaigner for the party Akhilesh Yadav said that after formation of the government, the first priority of the SP would be to provide assistance to the farmers through loan waivers and improvement in nutrition. He said that the BSP won five years to develop the state but it is wasted money on parks and stones. However, he also said that SP did not affect dalit monuments built by Mayawati. "They will be safe," he said.
What seems to have gone in favor of SP is its image makeover by Akhilesh. Previous SP rule in 2003-07, was known for poor law and order but Akhilesh promised to change the order this time. While Mulayam worked back Muslims who were angry after he shook hands with Kalyan Singh in 2009, Akhilesh worked to recruit different castes and communities. He was also able to attract youth.
The BSP is expected to remain second despite a loss of more than 100 seats compared to the 206 arrived in 2007.
Congress and BJP likely to improve, but fighting for the third and fourth place.
Congress ally RLD is also expected to increase their number.
SP seems to have support across the state and all castes and communities, while BSP suffered losses everywhere but it seems retained his Dalit base. However, Mayawati's social engineering have failed as Brahmins and Muslims do not seem to have a vote for BSP in large numbers as they did in 2007. Congress and BJP seems to have already stressed in some pockets of UP.
During celebrations began in SP head quarters in Lucknow, one eerie silence in BSP seat, and the gates were closed to visitors. Disappointment was palpable in the Congress office, while BJP camp was hopeful of getting more than 100 seats, double what came in 2007.
Reacting to be trends, SP general secretary Ram Gopal Yadav said that people voted against and five years of misrule in UP. He said that SP wins because it took a public cause for five years while sitting in opposition. He said that people also compared SP the previous rule with the current incumbent, and found the former better.
Congress campaign in UP was created hopes of a party revival in the state. The 4.5% rate for minorities has helped match making inroads in the Muslim community, which can tilt balance iin 140 seats in the state. However, during the elections, contradictory statements by Congress leaders Batla house encounter and infighting damaged party perspective.
UP Congress president Rita Bahugana Joshi said that although her party does not seem to be doing well, it would improve his bill. She said there is a strong anti-incumbency wave against Mayawati regime.
Congress leader Rajiv Shukla said that Rahul Gandhi has created a favorable atmosphere for the party through his work and campaign in UP. But, he said, a party could not convert it into a seat due to the absence of party pictures on the ground level. He stated that in each case Congress emerges as a key player in UP.
BJP national vice-president and a candidate for Lucknow East Kalraj Mishra said that party would do better than 2007. He acknowledged that induction of sacked BSP minister Babu Singh Kushwaha, which is a prime accused in NRHM scam and was arrested by CBI, damaged BJP's perspective upto some extent in UP. Mishra said that although Kushwaha members were suspended after a stiff opposition from his induction into the game, it dented BJP's attack on Mayawati on the issue of corruption.
The BJP received a drubbing in Lucknow, which used to be its stronghold for long. The party lost in Lucknow framework for the first time since 1991. This was the first elections in which former prime minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee was not in the picture. And this caused a crushing defeat for the party.
While UP Congress chief Rita Bahugana Joshi won from Lucknow Chant, SP The Ravidas Mehrotra has been chosen by Lucknow Central.
The SP Rehan Naim won Lucknow West during SP's Abhishek Mishra (who was a professor at Iim-Ahemdabad) was chosen by Lucknow North.
Only BJP robust Kalraj Mishra, who contested from Lucknow East framework, could achieve a win in Lucknow.
The BJP also lost in the rural areas of Lucknow. While Kaushal Kishor of Rashtrawadi Communist Party won from Malihabad, Chandra Rawat of SP emerged victorious Mohanlal Ganj and Sardinian Pratap Shukla of SP from Sarojininagar.
BJP was in a miserable state at the beginning of the election, but input from the fire brand leader Uma Bharti Hindutava galvanized paintings and brought a party back in the contest. BJP was also able to polarize votes on communal lines in several places on the issue of Muslim quota.
Uma Bharti, who was brought from Madhya Pradesh to campaign in UP, was ground by BJP from Charkhari seat in Bundelkhand. Uma factor seems to have worked as a BJP leads in a half of total 19 seats in Bundelkhand. Congress also does well in Bundelkhand. Congress general secretary Rahul Gandhi had begun his mission of UP Bundelkhand in 2007. He was instrumental in getting over Rs 3,000 crore development package for drought-prone region.
