Beirut: Syrian forces fired mortars and rockets on Thursday rebellious city Homs, the latest salvo in a weeklong assault that has killed hundreds of President Bashar Assad regime is trying to crush pockets of dissent.
Homs, Syria's third largest city has become the focus of both resistance and revenge is a 11-month uprising, as many areas have fallen under the control of an increasingly bold army defectors who want to lower the power once.

United Nations estimates that 5,400 people have been killed since the uprising began in Syria in March. But the number has since January, when the United Nations stopped counting because of the deteriorating security situation to keep the figures.
UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon said Wednesday plans to send observers to the Arab League head back to Syria and raised the possibility that a joint mission to the United Nations.
UN chief did not give specifics, but the idea seems designed to give impetus to the regional group's mission was pulled over the previous state because of security concerns.
"In the coming days, we will further consult the Council before fleshing out the details," Ban said. "We are ready to help in any way that will contribute towards the improvement of the ground."
Ban also reiterated his "deep regret" over the Council's ability to speak with one voice to end the bloodshed. China and Russia used their veto power to block the Security Council resolution on Saturday to support the Arab League peace plan, which calls for Assad to step aside.
Lack of unity of the council, Ban said the Syrian government has been encouraged to intensify their attacks against civilians.
"Thousands were killed in cold blood, damages claims, President Assad of Syria to talk to people," Ban said. "I am afraid that we are witnessing the terrible brutality of Homs, with a firing heavy weapons into civilian neighborhoods, gloomy to announce the worse to come."
