Pak SC convicts PM for contempt, Gilani says decision inappropriate

Pakistani Prime Minister was convicted Thursday of contempt of court by the highest court in the country, but as a symbolic sentence in a case that could still see thrown out of office. Prime Minister Gilani described the decision as inappropriate. Gilani told Geo News that the verdict improper.
The Supreme Court held Yousuf Raza Gilani, in contempt of his refusal to obey a command to write to the Swiss authorities asking them to corruption cases reopened against President Asif Ali Zardari.
Gilani faces a maximum sentence of six months in prison, but the court ordered him to be "imprisoned" until the hearing is adjourned and he emerged shortly after smiling and waving supporters.
The question now is whether he will be disqualified from office, which would add to political instability in a country already troubled by al-Qaida and Taliban violence.
Under Pakistan's constitution anyone convicted of libel or ridicule the judiciary is prohibited from being a member, but legal experts say the process to disqualify Gilani could be a long, involving the Speaker of Parliament and the Commission election.
"For reasons to be recorded later Prime Minister and CEO Yousuf Raza Gilani was convicted and sentenced for contempt of court," Nasir ul Mulk justice, the head of the bench of seven judges of the Supreme Court, has said.
Mulk said the conviction was "likely to cause serious consequences" for Gilani, and this was taken in mitigation regarding his sentence.
"It is therefore punishable under section five of contempt of court order imprisonment until the rising of the court," said the judge.
The case was politically charged, with members of the government accusing the judges of the over-intensification of their reach and try to bring down the Prime Minister and President, one year before the administration became the first time Pakistan to complete an elected term.
The corruption allegations against Zardari date back to 1990, when he and his late wife, former Prime Minister Benazir Bhutto, are suspected of using Swiss bank accounts to launder $ 12 million were paid in pots wine by companies seeking customs inspection contracts.
The Swiss set aside the case in 2008, when Zardari became president and a prosecutor in Switzerland said it will be impossible to reopen them, as he remains head of state and is therefore immune from prosecution .
Gilani insisted the president has full immunity, but in December 2009, the Supreme Court overturned an amnesty policy that had frozen the investigation of the president and other politicians.
Gilani left the court amid a scrum of journalists and supporters of her Pakistan People's Party.
Security was tight outside the court for the hearing, with nearly 200 riot police armed with shields and batons stationed outside and closed the approaches to the public.
