This is a very interesting story that takes some time to unfold. There are several storylines that seem to have nothing to do but have to start cutting each other later. Characters are layered and it is clear that the end can not trust. Many ethically challenged without any redeeming qualities, but there are enough to keep you are investing in results. It is a story that is well written across my mind is challenged.
I agree that I have a hard time because of the long-gone many story lines. I had almost given up putting the disparate threads come together at the end and they did. I was blown away in complicated plot and resolution. In my opinion, the treads are unnecessary and easily be dropped, but did not deny the story.
Many children of famous writers have been writing and getting published his novel - and are not the best.
Fortunately, Alafair Burke, author James Lee Burke's daughter, inherited genes that great writing. He can write and write well. Ellie Hatcher and Samantha Kincaid series I've read both and enjoyed them both. That said, I am happy for Ms. Burke is a standalone novel, I decided to break with.
